cisterns in Istanbul

The Basilica Cistern or Yerebatan Sarnici (Sunken Cistern) was built in Byzantine times by Emperor Justinian. We liked Justinian when we studied him as he seemed to be interested in fair laws and had a very cool empress, Theodora (no shrinking violet, known to have "intelligence superior to any man"). It was a hot day, so we enjoyed descending into the cool air of the Sunken Cisterns.

It was beautiful and peaceful. Ava liked watching the fish. We walked to the farthest corner where the two Medusa heads supported columns. One is upside down, the other sideways. No one is sure why they're built that way.

A touristy photo set up occupied a large corner, and after some thought, Ava decided getting dressed up as if she were in a harem would be a good idea. It's not really my thing or her thing, but hey, we don't encounter harem fashion opportunities all that often.

I know it's not your "thing" - but those are some nice costumes!
